w3wp.exe crashing with Application Error eventID 1000 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am getting the following error on SEVERAL windows 2008 r2 IIS 7.5 servers. I have exhausted Google, I have setup Debug Diag to try and capture a dump and it has nothing. Anyone have any suggestions/tips on trying to resolve this since the faulting module is "unknown" and this is a shared environment so it isn't as simply as knowing I have one IIS application and therefore something in that site is causing the problem, there are anywhere from 15 and up to over 40 IIS applications on the servers we are seeing this on.

Faulting application name: w3wp.exe, version: 7.5.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7a5f8
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x00000000
    Faulting process id: 0x1514
    Faulting application start time: 0x01ce366992da403c
    Faulting application path: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\inetsrv\w3wp.exe
    Faulting module path: unknown
    Report Id: d1fc8438-a25c-11e2-8861-005056830042

What I have started to do to try and narrow down what application is to record the PIDs of w3wp.exe and creating new application pools and shuffling the applications amongst the newly created to try and narrow it down, but very time consuming, so was looking to see if anyone had any insight between now and that (which could be several weeks with it not consistently crashing often).

  • This sounds like a good question for forums.iis.net if you want to learn IIS's capability in logging and debugging support, or find out which application pool is failing.

  • it appears EVERY application pool fails when this occurs. last 2 failures were Friday (first failed at 2:26:47, and the other 3 all failed within the next 13 seconds as the last failed was 2:27:00) and Saturday (first failed at 8:18:39, and the other 3 all failed within the next 14 seconds as the last failed pool was at 8:18:53). So I don't think it is code related, but something with w3wp.exe in general. will get a post created on iis.net, but any assistance here would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!

  • You're running this in 32bit mode?  If not your AppPool should be: Faulting application path: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\inetsrv\w3wp.exe

  • yes, the application pool is running in 32bit mode. this is still an issue not yet resolved here or by the suggestion of posting to IIS.NET forum. any assistance is greatly appreciated as I am trying to avoid the cost associated with opening a MS techsupport incident.

  • DebugDiag shows nothing?  Exception code: 0xc0000005 = Access Denied.  can you post your debugdiag HTML somewhere?
