How to activate first Win 2012 KMS server in an environment currently using WIN2003 KMS servers? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm considering replacing our ageing Windows 2003 KMS servers with Windows 2012 equivalents. Question is, when I first configure the KMS role on the first 2012 server, the server will not (at that stage) be activated itself as our existing 2003 KMS hosts cannot serve 2012 clients. Will I be able to continue to configure the 2012 KMS host by adding the channel licence as per usual and have the server activate itself? I want to avoid the need to install a temporary 2008R2 KMS host with the KMS 1.2 patch if at all possible and do not really want to waste a MAK licence to achieve the same result. AD activation is not a consideration as we will not be updating our schema to 2012 level for a long while.
