Another .Net 3.5 RTM framework failing to install on Vista problem. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I've wasted the best part of a day trying to install the .Net framework on my Vista box. Initially I was trying to install VS2008 which was failing when trying to install the framework. I have since been trying to install the framework separately.

I previously had beta2 installed although I have uninstalled it and any related components. It seems to be complaining about not being able to install KB929300 which I believe is an update to .Net framework. I've tried uninstalling it and some other hotfixes which I've seen mentioned in forums where people had problems installing the beta version, but it magically keeps reappearing.

    Any help appreciated.

    Event Log:

The Windows update "Update for Windows (KB929300)" could not be installed because of an error: 2149842978 "" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\WUSA.exe" "c:\34cd41c9d848669b52273478b3\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotnetmsp\x86\NetFX3.0-KB929300-v6000-x86.msu" /quiet /norestart")

  • Usually we have this issue when pending.xml gets locked by another install and 2.0 and 3.0 sp1 can't write to it.

Can you please try the following:

    1) reboot you machine

    2) Go to installed updates and install all recomended updates

    3) Reboot machine

    4) Install 3.5

Let us know if this doesn't help

In the log a portion says C:\Windows\system32\WUSA.exe exited with return value 34
There can be mutiple reasons for the same. I would recommend you to install the pacakge NetFX3.0-KB929300-v6000-x86.msu which would under the path WCU\dotNetFramework\dotNetMSP\x86 in the installation media and get more specific details...

As you have mentioned that you had earlier Beta on the machine, the orphan files and registry keys if any might be interfering with the installation.

  • If you are still having problem after trying Manisha's suggestions, please use the Framework 3.5 Installation Validation tool to verify the framework installation:
