This edition of Visual Studio only supports Windows Store apps.

    Question

  • Hi,

some time ago I developed a Visual Basic Application using a Win7/Visual Studio (VS) 2013 environment.
I needed to update this Application now, after I had moved the files to a new computer with a Win10.

I installed Visual Studio Express 2013, expecting to develop/update my application. Instead I got the message:

This edition of Visual Studio only supports Windows Store apps.

Which edition should I have downloaded?

I'd appreciate your help - Thanks

    Best regards - Walter

  • I think that you need “Express 2013 for Windows Desktop”. Various versions, including the newer Visual Studio 2015, can be found here: https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs. Select the required version from the lists.

    Hi mowastengr,

Before we update one project from the old VS version to the high VS version, we have to know that  project types it supports.

For example, if you want to use the free VS2013 express version:

    (1) You can use Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows Desktop to create powerful desktop apps in C#, Visual Basic, and C++. You can target client technologies such as Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Forms, and Win32.

    (2) You can use the tools in Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows to create innovative and compelling Windows Phone and Windows Store apps on Windows 8.1.

    ...

I think you could get all detailed information about every VS2013 version here:

    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs.aspx

    Best Regards,

    Jack

  • Thank you Jack, for the info.

I did not realize there are different versions of VS 2013 - now I know.

I did download Express 2013 for Desktop and I opened my old project: I did get a few error and warning, for which I will try to get support in a new thread.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Best regards - Walter

  • Hi, mowastengr

What is the application meant for that you developed in Visual Basic/Win 7/VS 2013(is it a Windows store app,Windows phone app, Web app,Universal Windows app,Windows Forms application etc.. to which platform the application is meant for?)

Visual Studio 2013 Express for Windows , only supports you to develop Windows Store applications/Phone applications

If you are opted to Upgrade your application to Windows 10 Universal or Windows 10 Phone app, You have to install Visual Studio Community Edition 2015, or Visual Studio Express 2015 for Windows 10.

Just once read the Complete description of the Visual Studio while Downloading from the
