Is there a fast way to save a workbook? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an xls workbook which includes about 200 modules and several classes and sheets. After updating a few lines in a module,  I saved the workbook, it took about 5 minutes. I was wondering if there was any settings that I could use to save a workbook faster.

  • Hi Nr1234,

Are you saving to a local drive?

  • Check if there is reference to other file in formula.

  • It does contain cells pointing to other sheets in the same workbook, also I believe it has formulas added by an Add-in XLA, which located in local drive as well.

  • First determine if the time is due to the code or stuff in sheets. Save a copy as an xlsx, remove all but one empty sheet and save a copy (ie the code) as an xlsm. Also try saving as an xlsb (w/out the worksheets).

200 modules is a lot but not exceptional and though of course it depends on the volume of code I wouldn't normally expect 5 minutes to save. However for a non addin that is a lot, consider separating all the code into an addin and, depending on the scenario, separating say logic, formulas & data entry and data as tables into two workbooks.
