[PHP][Web Apps] PHP web site performance issues in Azure RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have deployed an ELGG based PHP web site in Azure using an Azure Web App (Standard: 1 Large) and an Azure MySQL (Saturn pricing tier) database.

We are mainly using the ELGG Web Services plug-in to provide social media services to a mobile phone based application.

This site was migrated to Azure from a LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PhP) stack on an Amazon Web Service VM where

    everything performed quite well.

The performance in Azure as a web app is abyssmal, in most cases 10X slower running the same exact php code.  We have also deployed

the same site on an Azure VM under IIS with a co located MySQL database server.  This performs much better but is still 2-3X slower than the same site running in AWS.  We are using a D3 level VM in Azure which is a little heftier than the M4.large instance we had setup in AWS.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this is running so slowly in the Azure environment.   I need some ideas as to how to get the performance closer to what we had in AWS.
