In my side, I followed with your steps, and I could get the performance file in my project path.
>>Object null or not set to an instance of an object
According to this error, this issue is caused by VS has been damaged. Please refer to the following scenarios:
1). Delete the contents from the following folders:
C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio
C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VSCommon
2). Sometimes we need to reset our VS:
lick Start->Developer Command Prompt for VS-> type “devenv.exe /ResetSettings”
