SharePoint 2007 SP2 on Server 2008 R2 - KB 962935

Question

In the process of upgrading from Server 2008 SP1 to Server 2008 R2, I receive a message to disable feature - Office SharePoint 2007 and it gives reference to KB 962935.

I can't find an actual KB 962935.

Can anyone let me know if SharePoint 2007 SP2 is supported on Windows 2008 R2?

Hello,

 

The KB962935 is not available possibly because it is not ready for public yet. Mike is right and the KB962216 is basically describing the issue you met.

 

It seems that the pervious installation of Office SharePoint Server 2007/Windows SharePoint Service 3.0 Service Pack 1 is not supported by Windows Server 2008 R2, which leads to this issue. To workaround this issue, please try:

 

·          Upgrade your SharePoint product to Service Pack 2 before installing Windows Server 2008 R2;

·          Uninstall SharePoint product, upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 and then reinstall the SharePoint product.

 

As there is no test environment for me to reproduce the issue, I cannot guarantee the workarounds above will work in all scenarios. Therefore, please backup the SharePoint farm before doing any action. The ensured information is described in KB962935.

Don't you just love when they start rolling out new versions of everything but it's in no semblance of order and without complete documentation?

I find it interesting that the KB dissapeared. I'm wondering if this is the black hole of documentation between RC and RTM.. anyway, here's a link that discusses the need to use a SP2 slipstream to install on R2. I'm slightly confused as to why with SP2 already installed I'd need to remove then reinstall when doing an in place upgrade of windows. So I'm just going to plow through it and see what happens, it seems to be just a warning and not a blocker to the upgrade. I'll let you know how it goes...

I am running sharepoint on Server 2008 R2 beta in my test environment, so I obviously have SP2 installed for share point. When I attempt to upgrade to the RTM version of Server 2008 R2, I allso get the message about this KB article... My guess is it dosn't have anything to do with SP2... And if it dose, then there is something wrong with the installer as I already have it.

Uninstalling an reinstalling share point is ridiculous and I can't see anyone going through this for a production environment.

I apologize for the delay - It turns out I also has WSUS installed on that server, and that's apparently a no-go until WSUS SP2, which coincidentally hasn't been released yet. Got to love how in tune the different departments are - and how well everyone communicates.

OK - so my personal answer is no, it didn't work. After the in place upgrade to R2 with having SP2 previously installed, I see a slew of SharePoint errors in the event log. I'm going to investigate further. I'm hoping it's as simple as just reinstalling SP2 *finger crossed*. I'll update if that fixes it or if I have to completely remove/reinstall.

*update* - Running SP2 got me nowhere; it says it's already installed and stops. Oddly enough, my site *appears* to be running fine. I'm not sure yet what the errors refer to so I'll keep investigating that. I did open my site URL, and it appears to be working from just a "displaying correctly" standpoint. I may just try running through configuration.

*update #2* - Ran through configuration for grins, everything was correct, and it didn't resolve my event log errors. It looks like my issue appears to be some pre-existing search ____. So as far as I can tell, having SP2 installed prior is safe for an in place upgrade of windows server 2008 to R2. Though I am not an authority on the subject and make no guarantee. :p

The item that was actually stopping me from installing wasn't the error message in question....  My disk wasn't expanded to its proper capacity making the install think I didn't have enough disk space. I corrected the problem, But I am still getting the Message about MOSS. However, now it lets me continue beyond this error message. I will let you know how the install goes.
 
I am not sure how to post a picture here... but the exact text is as follows:

I have come across a simialar problem but via a different route.

I have a fresh install of WS 2008 R2 (not upgrade from WS2008) and tried installing Sharepoint 2007 with SP1 from a downloaded .iso image

The installation fails with the error "This program is blocked due to compatibility issues" and with references to KB article 962935.  It implies I should install Sharepoint 2007 with the most recent service pack, but only SP1 has been slipstreamed on Microsoft download.    (Link to screen capture of error message below.)

Slipstreaming SharePoint SP2 into SharePoint 2007 Server with SP1 does the job when trying to install on a fresh Windows Server 2008 R2.

Basically all you have to do is the following:

• Extract OfficeServerwithSP1.exe by executing  "OfficeServerwithSP1.exe /extract:C:\yourpathsp1\"
• Extract officeserver2007sp2-kb953334-x64-fullfile-en-us by executing  "officeserver2007sp2-kb953334-x64-fullfile-en-us /extract:C:\yourpathsp2\"
• Copying all files from "C:\yourpathsp2\" to "C:\yourpathsp1\Updates\"

It worked like a charm for me :)

It s a big problem "from scratch" to install MOSS on windows 2008 server R2 

WSS 3   exists in installable version including SP2.  Installation is success !

Hello Cristophe,

Indeed MOSS is not directly packaged with SP2, which is why you first have to download MOSS SP1, then the SP2 file and finally follow the instructions in my post above to "build" your own MOSS SP2 setup. You can prepare the setup files on any OS, it doesn't have to be Windows 2008 R2.

Now if you want to install MOSS on a Windows 2008 R2 server you have to do this first as you cannot install MOSS SP1 and then update to SP2.

Normally when you install a MOSS service pack you have to first install the WSS service pack. So do we need to extract the WSS service packs into MOSS as well?

You're correct, you need to have WSS SP2 installed before installing MOSS SP2 but you can actually get it with the SP2 included directly from Microsoft website (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=EF93E453-75F1-45DF-8C6F-4565E8549C2A&displaylang=en). Extracting WSS service packs into MOSS wouldn't work.

This worked like a champ. Fresh install of Windows Server 2008 R2 X64 and install all prereqs (IIS, Etc). After extracting the files as required, install ran through without error! Good work!

This morning I did an inplace upgrade from Windows2008 x64 ==> Windows2008 R2.
First I had to un-install SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2, did the upgrade, and then re-installed SS 3.0 SP2.

Now, whenever I'm starting the configuration wizard, I get an error on the "mssql$sharepoint" service, and the system asks me to correct this program through control panel...??
BUT, this mssql$sharepoint service isn't installed at all??

Anybody any suggestions?

Try the new SharePoint 2007 64bit download from the official site. It should have SP2 with it.

Downloading the wss and moss sp2 patches works on a virgin r2. the wss needs a /C /T:<install path updates> while the moss uses the /extract:<install path updates>. after running these, I didn't find the wsss dll so didn't delete it (grin). ran setup cmd and it ran like a charm. thanks folks. for a while there, I was taxing my four letter word vocabulary...

I have followed these procedures, and have successfully installed Sharepoint on my Windows Server 2008 R2 machine.  Before that, I installed the Web server role, and it is started.  However, when I run the Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard, I receive a message stating that the Internet Information Services are not installed.  Whgat gives?

HI,

I've got Windows Server 2008 SP2 installed, and i want to install moss 2007 on it, but my license is for moss 2007 without service pack, and searching i found that the only way to install moss on Server 2008 is with Service Pack 2, which i got no license for it.

Is there any workaround for this? or do i need to buy the moss 2007 sp2 license?

Yes, i've tried, but when i try to change the license to enterprise, the one i got is for Sharepoint Server 2007 without any SP, so it won't take it, wrong license. On the other hand, i'm trying to get the Sharepoint Server 2007 with SP2, for 32 bits S.O. on the Volume License Center.

The License Administrator people told me that the license for enterprise x86 and x64 is the same. But it won't take it anyway.
