Using a file to index and access image, video, and PDF files, these files are not a part of the app package RRS feed

I am developing a method in C++ for a windows 8 app. I would like to use a resource file to read in the index file that would contain file location and data binding information. The index file and access files (Images, Videos, and PDF) will not be a part of the app package.

Could anyone provide me a jumping off point? This is really easy to do in the desktop, but needs to be in Windows 8.1 app.

  • Where are these files? What exactly are you trying to do?

The app has direct access only to its install location and app data location. If you need access to files elsewhere on the system you'll need to go through the StorageItem brokers and get user permission either through a file or folder picker or through library capabilities.

Once you have user permission you can persist it with the AccessCache classes.

I discuss some of this in my blog entry Skip the path: stick to the StorageFile
