Import mainframe dataset file/field definition and Excel file/field headings to create text file report. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our mainframe service provider, provides a large data file (.txt) that has multiple records and numerous fields.  They also provide a mainframe data set definition (say COBOL flat file definition) file/record/fields and an Excel document containing matching column headings for the entire file.

Is it possible to include this information into a C# program to read the file and create an output file as a text file format report that can then be viewed and/or printed.

The goal is to take advantage of the file definition as defined on the mainframe to reduce the bulk of coding.  There are some fields that require table look up, to print the code descriptions.

  • Sounds doable but without any additional information I cannot say for sure. .NET can easily read text files and you can parse it however you want. Once you have the data you can display it in any manner you want including using a local report to generate reports against it.

The biggest issue you may have is the size of the data. If it is really large (GBs) then it might be better to use SSIS to import the file into a SQL (or other) database. Then use SSRS to generate reports or C# to extra some of the data you need for a UI, depending upon your usage cases.
