FULL backup taken after mirror restore taking place RRS feed

  • Question

  • Say I have already created the initial full backup and have restored it to the mirror.

I then have created the needed TLog an am in the process of restoring that on the mirror.

IF I take another FULL backup of the source DB ... does this beak the mirroring backup chain?

In otherwords, in executing this second FULL backup BEFORE the TLog was fully restored and mirroring was enabled ... does that stop me from bringing the mirror online?

    Thanks!

  • No it does not stop from bringing mirroring online... Full back does not break mirroring backup chain ..... only Log backups does

we take transaction log backups on our mirrored databases... also, log shipping wouldn't work in conjunction with mirroring if you weren't able to take transaction log backups

  • As previously said, FULL database backup does not break database mirroring session after database mirroring setup. Moreover, T-Log backup does not break the mirroring session as well this is because that the log records are marked for mirroring and if they are not replicated to the mirror server, they won't be truncated after t-log backup. This also applies to transactional replication.

  • Just so we are on the same page ... a portion of Alex's comment was " after database mirroring setup." ... "after" being the key word here.

My question is not concerning AFTER the mirror is set up but more in the line of WHEN mirroing is BEING set up.

The mirror HAD NOT been established yet (in fact the large 50GB TLog was still restoring) when another FULL backup was executed on the Published DB of the soon-to-be mirrored pair.

I have now found out (by continuing the mirror setup process even though another full was taken) that it did not affect the mirror from being established once that large TLog backup finally restored.

Thanks ALL for the great response.
