Store App testing: Timeout for vstest.console.exe RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I like to unit test a Windows Store App on Windows 8.1 (x64). It perfectly works inside VS 2012 Update 4 but from time to time not via command line.

    Steps to reproduce:

    1. Build a unit testing appx, e.g.:
    msbuild "UnitTest\App_UnitTests.vcxproj" /m /t:Rebuild /p:Configuration="Debug";Platform="Win32"

    2. Run the tests, e.g.:
    vstest.console.exe "UnitTest\AppPackages\App_UnitTests\App_UnitTests_1.0.0.0_Win32_Debug_Test\App_UnitTests_1.0.0.0_Win32_Debug.appx" /InIsolation

Sometimes, the second command fails with a 15 second timeout. However, sometimes it helps to run it again immediately (and it succeeds in let's say 3 seconds, so it's actually not a lenghty task!). For unit testing a solid way would be greatly appreciated. The error messsage: "Installation of package **app name** failed with Error: (0x5B4) Operation timed out. Unable to install Windows app package in 15 sec.."

Unit testing for Store Apps seems to be a bit tricky. It is advised to not directly test the dll but the appx because those apps are sandboxed or something similar. Here's an MSDN blog post: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/vikramagrawal/archive/2012/05/06/running-unit-tests-for-windows-metro-style-apps-from-command-line.aspx
