Adding a CoAP server to Azure role RRS feed

  • Question

  • I  am trying to add a server [Tested as a console application] to my Azure portal. I need to make use of UDP. Since UDP is not supported in a web role, can I create a worker role, then add a web role for the server? What is the cost for doing this if I have a worker role constantly running? Is this the best solution or can someone offer a better less costly solution?

  • Hi Mike,

Currently, it seems that UDP is supported by Web Role. Please see this words:

For a web role, possible values are HTTP, HTTPS, UDP, or TCP.

Please see web role schema (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/gg557553.aspx#Endpoints ).>>can I create a worker role, then add a web role for the server? What is the cost for doing this if I have a worker role constantly running?

You also can create worker role to host your constantly project. The expenses is depended on your need. Please see cloud service pricing page (http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/cloud-services/).But I am not sure I understand "add a web role for the server" meaning. Base on my understanding, Web role can be one or more than one instance (VM).

The another approach is VM. You could host your project on Azure VM, and run your background code on VM. In this solution, you also use the UDP protocol.

Note: You can’t use UDP for input endpoints in the compute emulator.

    Will
