Is SCVMM required even when using physical environment

Question

Hi,

I've installed the test controller, and agent on a physical box. I've managed to point it to our TFS Collection, and in Test Manager i can create physical environment and add the server.

However i can't deploy it as it says the TFS server isn't set up. (It's not permissions as i have full permission on TFS server).

If I look at our TFS Server under lab management it says it's not configured and requires SCVMM Admin console.

Do i need to install this even if i'm not using virtual environments?

Hi,

If you are attempting to deploy a build on an environment using the LabTemplate then you require the target environment to be a virtual environment, for which you would need to configure a SCVMM server and associate it with the TFS installation.

SCVMM is not provided in the update but you can download a licensed version of the product if you use it only for Lab Management (http://visualstudiomagazine.com/Articles/2010/03/18/Working-with-VS-Lab-Management.aspx?Page=2). VS Ultimate customers can download it from msdn.

What if i don't want to have any of the build-deploy-test features. i purely just want to create the lab environment with the limited features. Do i still need to deploy SCVMM server?

Hello,

No, you do not need the SCVMM server to be installed to work with Physical environment. You can run unit tests, manual tests, coded UI and other automated tests on Physical environment. You can file rich bugs using diagnostic adapters with some customization. And you can run Build-Deploy-Test workflow on physical environments also, with some customization. Look into this blog:
