2016_0208: Access options for tablets used in the field with sensitive data RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, Everyone!

Scenario:  I have a potential law-enforcement client who works with highly sensitive data in the field. Right now, everything is done in hard copy in the field and then transferred over into what is essentially a one-table Access database once they're back in the office. The client is hoping to purchase MS Surface tablets for this work. If possible, they want to eliminate the hard-copy intake and put it directly into their Access database while in the field.

Question: Is this doable?! And if so, how? And how does one keep the sensitive data secure?

I have only ever worked with desktop versions, so this is all new to me. I will be meeting with them again tomorrow to ask them more questions about their needs, and I'll be writing up a bid for the work this week; it would be fantastic if I could give them a realistic expectation of what can be done before I commit to anything. Lord knows they need basic database development for a desktop version; that I can handle, but a mobile Access application that allows for secure data? Yikes.

Thank you in advance for your considerate input!

  • Hi YooperGal,

As far as I know, the Access only provide encryption for the whole database. If you want to store the sensive data in the table level, you may consider to encrypt the information before you store it into table.

You can refer to link below about encryption for database:
Encrypt a database by using a database password
