Problems installing Framework 4 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Whenever i try to install framework 4 it stops at 'Downloading Windows6.1-KB958488-v6001-x86.msu'

I have tried running as administrator, turning off AV, deleting %temp% folder. None of them worked :(

My laptop is running Windows 7, Compaq. When it finishes it says 'Download failed with error code 0x800c0006'

    This is the log file:

In regard to this, I have a couple of questions and a few suggestions from related threads:

    Questions:

    1. Have you been using the web installer or the standalone installer? If the former, please use the standalone installer:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a391abd-25c1-4fc0-919f-b21f31ab88b7&displaylang=en

    2. Did you abort the installation while still running, as indicated by the above?

Suggestions (listed in order of what looks interesting, most interesting first):

When you try these, please remember to always use the cleanup tool after each failure, then reboot you computer.

Clean out your %temp% directory, disable your AV software and run the installer "As Administrator".

Read the answer in each thread:

    1. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/8a18b2e5-1864-40f2-a198-9c8a60f3b253

    2. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/netfxsetup/thread/8fb799a2-56f2-428d-9598-c002935b82be?prof=required

    3. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/netfxsetup/thread/c12fdcc4-ce66-46fd-b153-96ce5f1e26b3/

Note on #3: If you have used a third party registry cleaner, that could be causing your issues. If that's the case, you'll probably have to reinstall Win 7.

  • Thanks for pvdg42's active participation and friendly assistance in the forum!

    @DanSzyndler,

Regarding this issue, for the error code: 0x800C0006 -> INET_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND = The site reports that the item you requested could not be found. (HTTP/1.0 404).

According to the error message and your description, you could not access to Microsoft sites, it appears that the Internet connection issue is the cause of installation failed. So besides the installation issue, I would suggest you to contact your ISP, or check your Internet connection to prevent this kind of problem occurs again.

If you need further assistance, feel free to let me know. I will be more than happy to be of assistance.

    Have a great day.

  • Try the standalone installer after cleaning up from the failed install with this:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx

    Here's the standalone installer:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a391abd-25c1-4fc0-919f-b21f31ab88b7&displaylang=en

If you continue to have issues, please collect the complete logs with this tool:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=e0da314f-6216-4a18-bc6b-7d29cf83af20&displaylang=en

You'll find the output, vslogs.cab, in your %temp% directory.

Upload that file to a public site, like SkyDrive, then post the link here.

  • Is there a link outside of microsoft's page for the log collector tool? I can't download the one on microsofts website.
    Sunday, May 22, 2011 8:18 PM
  • Thanks but for some reason i cant access that site either:/

Could you upload it to mediafire or zshare please?

    Monday, May 23, 2011 5:55 AM
  • The fact that you are unable to download a file from two different sites leads me to believe you have system problems beyond the inability to install a .NET Framework.

Are you having other issues with your computer as well?

Here is another link to try (confirmed here as good):

  • Yes i have several problems which i believe are all linked somehow.

    1. My windows 7 doesn't update

    2. I need to do something on IE to fix that, but the thing is i uninstalled IE a while ago and now i cant access the websites to install it again.

    3. Framework ^^ I believe that my windows 7 not being updated may be the problem.

I found a external link to download the IE9 setup. (I cant access some microsoft sites) I was installing and then it told me i needed a update. I cannot, however find a external link for this update :/

This is the website for the update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2399238

    I need the Windows 7 x86 package.

If you could find me a external link for that or something then i think all my problems will be solved!

I ran the log collector program and it finished what should i do? It didn't show up with anything it just closed after everything was 100%

    Thanks for all the help,

Do you have Skype so i can show you my screen which may be useful?

    Monday, May 23, 2011 4:24 PM
  • OK, as you ran Collect.exe, you will find a file named vslogs.cab in your %temp% directory.

You need to upload that file to a public site of your choice, then post a link to that file here.

    No, I don't use Skype.

Given the spectrum of problems you mention, a repair or reinstall of Windows 7 may be necessary.

    Monday, May 23, 2011 7:31 PM
  • I'm sorry, but the download site you chose is trying to force me to install "Google Toolbar" on my system before it allows me to download vslogs.cab.

I do not use the term "force" lightly. The only options I am given are either install the unwanted software of cancel the download.

That is not acceptable to me. Perhaps somebody else who reads this thread will be willing to do it.

Note on #3: If you have used a third party registry cleaner, that could be causing your issues. If that's the case, you'll probably have to reinstall Win 7.

  • Before i try these (remember i cant go to microsoft sites) i found a external link for framework. Its called dotNetFx40_Full_setup.exe is this the standalone installer? If not could you please upload the standalone installer to a different site.

  • No, that's a ~900 KB file, correct? That's the web installer. The standalone is ~48 MB.

    OK,

Before you start, please carefully consider the other issues you are having with your computer.

In your situation, I would definitely take care of the other issues before attempting to install more software.

  • Thanks for pvdg42's active participation and friendly assistance in the forum!

    @DanSzyndler,
