Rockwell PLC data on Microsoft Azure RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

A tyre industry is interested in enhancing its productivity, machine up times, labour management, mental happiness and operational efficiency. This is a big step. Nevertheless, the plan of action depends on number of individual processes and their results to generate an intelligent and interactive system.

It all started with processes clarity, operational revisions, expected productivity targets, timelines, design viability etc. I am now structuring an architecture for central data management and manipulation. Let me enter into the specific challenge for which I am currently finding a robust solution.

I have many sensors, actuators, transmitters etc which are the actual data generators for my system. All the data generated from these physical devices is collected in a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) for process handling and automation. Traditionally, I embed all the PLC data in a SQL database on a local server. Now, I want to move this data to a cloud database for central management. Naturally, as Microsoft is an industrial partner with Rockwell Automation, I was going through Microsoft Azure cloud platform documents to meet my goals. Additionally, Rockwell PLC's exchange data with Microsoft operating systems using OPC server/client architecture.

Is it possible to send data from Rockwell PLC to Microsoft Azure cloud database using OPC client/server communication protocol?

I am glad to take this discussion ahead! Hoping for a reply.

    Thanks.

  • Thanks for the reply Satish! If the communication is feasible, I would be happy to take this discussion ahead. This is because OPC standard is the only way standalone Rockwell PLC's can communicate to any third party OPC supported data exchange tools.

Waiting for a technical confirmation. Regards.
