Removing the Server from the farm RRS feed

  • Question

  •

    Hi,

As depicted in the figure above , we have two servers connected to a common SQL Server. SERVER 2 has a Central Administration site which takes the URL of SERVER 1 and another Central Administration site is running on SERVER 1 as well,Our internal portal is running on SERVER 1. Now the requirement is to REMOVE SERVER 1 from the farm and move the internal portal to SERVER 2 .

I know the process of doing this but i need advice as to whether it will create problems while moving the internal portal from one server to another while both the servers are connected to a common SQL Server. Please recommend the best method of moving the portal from SERVER 1 to SERVER 2 and removing the SERVER 1 from the farm.

    Thank You..

  • Hi,

Yes once you migrate the roles by changing the services these will be migrated automatically.

As the servers in the same farm so they will be attached to the single SQL server so it is the expected one.

  • Hi,

no it will not harm anything while moving from one server to another, if we follow a proper steps / sequence :)

Is there any NLB configured between these two servers?

If yes, redirect users to hit only server 2 while they are accessing sites.

Then remove server 1 from NLB and once it will be removed from NLB, remove it from SharePoint farm as well

  • Hi Pratik,

    Thanks for your reply.

The point which i want to raise here is that the portal is residing on SERVER 1 and if i remove SERVER 1 from the farm , then the users won't be viewing the portal .  I hope my point is clear to you  :)

  • Hi,

From your description I suppose that you have configured central admin role on Server 2 and portal is hosted in server 1 as WFE role. Hence You need to provide role of WFE to server 2 first. This will create the site in IIS and it will reflect in your central admin also. Once you ave done it you can remove server 1 from farm and then you can execute configuration wizard.

I hope this will help you out.

  • Hi Rahul,

The Central Admin site on Server 2 is using the URL of Server1 's Central Admin site and the portal is on Server 1 .

  • Hi,

So your portal and central admin both are hosted in server 1.

SO Now go to Central admin and see observe the services running on server 1. Configure these services on server 2 and then you can remove server 1 from your farm.

I hope this will help you out.

  • Hi Rahul,

Now you've understood it completely . I know that process but i have another issue which is that  SERVER 2  IS CONNECTED TO THE SAME SQL SERVER WHICH SERVER 1 IS CONNECTED TO.

By doing the process you've told , will the portal gets migrated to Server2  automatically ?

Till now, i've done Server migrations  but now only i have encountered this type of issue for the first time  :)

  • Hi ,

    Looks fine ..

So i'll go with this >  Remove Server 1 from the farm

                                >  Migrate the roles by changing the services on Server 2

Is this kind of approach feasible enough ?

  • Hi,

    Follow opposite:

First configure the services in server 2 and then remove server 1

  • Hi Rahul, First of all sorry for bothering you so much :) but since it's a very huge portal i have to make sure that everything's back to normal after the migration. Ok so as per your suggestion i should configure the services on Server2 first and then remove the Server1, but are you sure that just by configuring the required services on Server 2 it would MOVE the PORTAL to Server 2 or else the PORTAL would move only after i remove the Server 1 from the farm ? (Just a bit curious :) ).

  • Hi,

As soon as you will configure services the web applications will get copied into the IIS.

You can verify the same before removing your another server from farm
