ping two vm with out virtual network?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have created two VM in same data center (south asia). I did not create any virtual network these are just two stand alone vms. I am trying to ping each other with there dhcp assign 10.x.x.x ip address but ping failed.

1 I want to ask is it possible to ping each other with out virtual network?

2 will dhcp always assign the same ip address to vm or it could be change when i restart virtual machine.

3 if i create one virtual network  and assign a network. will same ip address will be assigned by dhcp or it could be change when i restart vm.

  • You can ping between VMs even if they are not in a virtual network, but you need to allow it in the guest OS firewall settings.

For example you can allow ICMP in the Windows firewall by running:

    netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="All ICMP V4" dir=in action=allow protocol=icmpv4

The VMs keep the same dynamic IP for the life of that VM. If you run ipconfig /all you'll see the DHCP lease expiration will be pretty far in the future:

       Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, August 17, 2148 1:26:36 AM

This is true whether or not the VM is in a virtual network.

    Thanks,

  • I am having the same exact issue.  I can ping by IP address, but cannot ping by hostname.  The hostnames simply do not resovle to their IP addresses.

The two virtual machines are in the same virtual network, both windows, both on the same subnet "backend".   The only thing is they are not in the same Cloud Service (since i need multiple ips).

Can you please let me know a workaground, Is Azure DNS service not working?
Also, when will linux virtual networking be supported?
