how to create an own html displaying textarea RRS feed

    Hi,

What I need is some sort of WYSIWYG textarea but NOT an editor as such. All editors I found and tried do not support all of my needs but only one or some which eventually makes them useless for me.

    What I need:

    - a textarea that keeps format of pasted text but I don't need to be able to edit it like with an editor

    - I need to be able to use onclick events in it in order to get id of clicked DIV and execute Javascript based on such a click

    - I need to be able to use scrollBy in Javascript

    - I need to be able to apply CSS on that textarea

Maybe I could need some other features later but that would be to be seen then, so please do not try to guess what I could need for my project but only answer the question below.

Is there a tutorial on how to program such a basic editor for VB.NET or in Javascript (that I could implement like CKEditor) by myself so that I could adapt it to my needs?

    Thanks in advance,

    Pascal

You won't be able to develop this using VB as that executes on the server and I assume that your requirement is for something that runs in the browser (client-side). My suggestion is that you search for "create your own rich text editor" and run through the basics of creating your own. That way you should have a starting point for modifying to your needs, or asking more specific questions.

Bear in mind that all rich text editors are fundamentally textareas dresses up with CSS and JS.

None if them should rely on PHP or ASP.NET. They are both server-side frameworks that have nothing to do with developing rich text editors.

I cannot get any of them to work on my asp.net pages.
Perhaps you should start a new thread explaining what you have tried and what issues you have encountered.

    Hi Mike,

Yes, I know it would not work out in VB directly and already guessed I would need to code everything in CSS or Javascript but don't know where to start.

Would you know one or a few links where I can find such basics or maybe a tutorial? I have not really found anything I could use or maybe I simply did not realize I had the correct information at hand on one of the sites I found.

It turned out that I apparently used wrong search terms. I now found plenty of useful results. Thanks.

I will leave the post open for now a update it with further information as soon as I get some useful results about my progress. Thanks Mike.

well in fact I just realized that I already got these results before and the fact I could not get them to work is that all examples for creating an own WYSIWYG editor are for mysql and php. That should normally make no difference due to javascript being used as this does not interfere with codebehind but I cannot get any of them to work on my asp.net pages.

So again, are there any tutorials or links for such solutions for asp.net.

doh. … stupid me. I had working what I wanted all the time but I tested it in Firefox all the time and there it does not work if iframe does not contain any html or text other than head and body. :(

Will post a new thread as I got some issue with FF that I need to solve.
