target audiences in global navigation links not working RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have some links in Global Navigation.  I put some Sharepoint groups in the audience targetting.  And I have a test account that's not in these groups (is in a different group); and this account can still see the link.

Does Audience Targetting actually work?  Is there something else I need to do to make it work?

    thanks!

  • Yes it works.

You are doing correct (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint-server-help/target-content-to-specific-audiences-HA010169053.aspx)and this is sufficient to set a  Target navigation link to an audience. Are you sure that all users are not part of the domain users AD group(if nested).

For testing purpose can you try add the specific users instead of Sharepoint group.

Make sure your User Profile Service Application is running, Audience Targeting doesn't work if User Profile Service Application is not running!

  • ok, I think our User Profile Service Application is not set up properly.

In Manage Service Applications, we have more than one listed:

    Name - Type
User Profile Service Application - User Profile Service Application
User Profile Service - User Profile Service Application
User Profile Service - User Profile Service Application Proxy

When I click on the 2nd one - User Profile Service, that is where I see Profiles set up, etc.
When I click on the 1st one - User Profile Service Application, there is a red error at the top "This User Profile Application's connection is currently not available.  The Application Pool or User Profile Service may not have been started..."

All of these services say they are "Started"

  • I have exact same issue with navigation and target audience in navigation setting is set to SharePoint group and one user in this group sees the link and other user in same group does not. The application(sp2013) is running for 3 years so its weird sharepoint menu or this navigation setting or group issue.
