Getting started developing for Kinect RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, I have a Kinect Xbox 360 Sensor and I want to develop a "beatbox" application for it which has virtual buttons which the user can press to stop/start different sounds.

I basically want to ask, for my specific application , how should I go about starting Kinect developing, I read a lot of manuals but I am unsure where exactly to begin. One thing I realize is that I have to choose the language between C# and C++. I have no experience in either but a lot of experience in Java programming.

Also some tips specific to my application would be very helpful as that is the only thing I am interested in doing with the Kinect at the moment.

  • Hello there!

Welcome to the wonderful (and sometimes frustrating) world of kinect. To answer your questions; C# is a lot easier to learn than C++, I suggest C#. That and C# is basically microsoft's version of Java (seriously, you'll notice the similarities once you dive in if you've used java before).

The best place to start is the kinect quickstart series here; http://channel9.msdn.com/Series/KinectQuickstart

I strongly recommend going through those to familiarise yourself with the tools at your disposal.

As for tips, it depends how you want to access those virtual buttons. Do you want to use your hand as a mouse cusor and click the virtual buttons, if so, have a look at http://kinectmouse.codeplex.com/

Otherwise, the other option is to use a set of gestures to do what you want and then have some method of recognising those gestures.

    Hope that helps! Good luck!
