I do not know the second book but imho Mathew McDonald is a terrific writer.
Please note: it's possible to sample books online at many publishers and at Amazon.com.
If you belong to ACM (acm.org) you can access books online. $US99. http://www.acm.org/
ACM via books 24x7 has the 3.5 version of Mathew's book.
BTW, Wrox books tend to be decent too.

Hi,
is must agree with gerrylowry. I've read both books and the apress books are very good. And Mathew McDonald is a great author, I've read many of his books.

I haven't read any books from the Black Book Series, but if you want to choose one from the other two books, you should read the one from Mathew McDonald.

@ technoankur
i do not know if the series you mention is the famous Black Book Series that I used to read years ago ... I think those were from Corolis publisher ... the Corolis Black Books were usually good and complete.
Bottom line, imho, depends more on the author than the publisher in most cases.
If I could afford only one, because I'm familiar with his work, I'd almost certainly go with Matthew MacDonald.
Regardless, first I'd check reviews at Amazon.com and try to preview a chapter or two of each book, if available, online.
6 reviews, rating 4+ out of five

i noticed a similer thread here: http://forums.asp.net/t/1699410.aspx/1?Black+Book+or+Beginning+ASP+NET
Because it's very important, I repeat my caveat from the above link:
if you are only going to use ASP.NET MVC 3, then instead I would purchase http://www.amazon.com/Pro-ASP-NET-MVC-3-Framework/dp/1430234040/ ...
see Rob Conery's article http://blog.wekeroad.com/blog/i-spose-ill-just-say-it-you-should-learn-mvc/ and the related discussion at http://forums.asp.net/t/1430369.aspx.
