Couple of outlook add-in related queries RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We already have a VSTO model oriented outlook add-in in our desktop clients. Features inside the add-in is tightly coupled with send button - all the validations will happen when the user tries to send the composed mail.

Currently we are trying to migrate this to the new office add-in model and facing lot of problems.

    1. As per the microsoft technical articles, onsend feature to detect the send button click feature (in new add-in model) is limited to Office 365 platform and yet to be extended to other desktop clients. Hence we couldn't convert our application as we desired.

    2. Then we used outlook interop to capture the events and tried to deploy the same in IIS. Here outlook is not getting loaded as microsoft seems doesn't encourage server side office automation.

Can anyone tell me what can be done with these two options and any new option to migrate my VSTO to new office add-in model.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Vinoth,

    1. Mail Apps can work only with Exchange profiles. You just need to continue developing an existing VSTO based solution if you want to cover all scenarios.

    2. You can use EWS, see EWS Managed API, EWS, and web services in Exchange for more information. Also take a look at the Outlook Mail REST API reference page.

  • Thanks Eugene for your response. Will check on the APIs you mentioned above.

  • EWS and the REST APIs will provide the information available in the exchange server and the same can be retrieved using the callback.

But is there any way to get hold of the information from the outlook client even before getting sent to the exchange server. Like details of a mail sender, subject, attachments, recipients when user tries to send the mail using the Send button.

I would like to capture these details in the send_button_click event. Will either EWS and REST API's support this - without VSTO approach?

  • VSTO is for developing COM based add-ins, not Mail Apps. If we speak about VSTO, you may handle the ItemSend event of the Outlook Application class which is fired whenever an Microsoft Outlook item is sent, either by the user through an Inspector (before the inspector is closed, but after the user clicks the Send button) or when the Send method for an Outlook item, such as MailItem , is used in a program.

For Mail Apps the best what you can do is to use Outlook Push Notifications REST API .
