SharePoint Office document converter for version history RRS feed

  • Question

  • Running Microsoft Office SharePoint server 2007.  Most document libraries have versioning enabled and contain Word and Excel files.

I need a utility that will convert Office 2003 documents (doc, xls) to Office 2007 or 2010 format (docx, xlsx), and convert the version history with it.  It is critical that all minor and major versions get converted, including metadata, security and comments.  I have found utilities that will convert only the last version, which is not going to work for us.

I spoke to MS presales support and was referred to this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms518493.aspx  Unfortunately it applies to SharePoint 2010 and does not appear to convert version history, at least it is not mentioned in the above article.

I have some prospects with some MS partners, only the products are still in development/beta phases.

    Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

  • Looks like we are going to use a custom product developed by SharePoint Engine (http://www.sharepointengine.com) called SE Document Converter.  They are just now finalizing the product and I have only seen demos, so I cannot vouch for it good or bad.

  • Have you considered theMicrosoft Office Compatibility Pack?  This should help you open and edit documents on an "as need basis" rather than spending resources, time and money on doing it en masse.

  • Thank you for your reply, Steve.  However, my issue isn't opening 2007/10 Office documents with Office 03 or earlier.  All my users have Office 2007 and we will soon have office 2010, so compatibility isn't the issue.

We need to leverage features of the Office 07/10 format and veer away from having the pre-Office 2007 formatted files in versioned document libraries.

Yes, we could manually convert the last version, but then there are duplicate files (one in pre-07 and one in 07/10 format) and the version history will be broken up.

    I appreciate your suggestion.
