How I can get 3D Images with Kinect? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Kinect offers to us cameras that can be used to get 3D images. How can I get 3D images and save it in OBJ file?

  • The Kinect SDK beta provides (A) APIs to get skeleton joints for a human skeleton in 3D space, and also provides (B) a depth image stream, which can be used to generate 3D meshes that represent the environment that Kinect is viewing. To generate 3D objects directly from (B), there are multiple strategies, and an effective one is "KinectFusion: Real-Time Dynamic 3D Surface Reconstruction and Interaction" (http://research.microsoft.com/apps/pubs/default.aspx?id=152807), which was a paper written for SIGGRAPH 2011. I'd recommend looking for that paper to learn how they did it.

About OBJ files, I'm guessing you mean Wavefront OBJ file (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavefront_.obj_file). To save in such an OBJ file, you would have to become familiar with the file format and then write the code yourself to output a file in that format after you have the 3D mesh.

    Hope this helps,
    Eddy
