Windows 8 Driver Development from existing source file with Visual Studio 9 RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hello,

I am new to driver writing and want to know how can i develop a USB driver for my device compatible to windows 8?

I have source file of USB driver compatible with windows 7 32 bit O.S. and i am well know about the process of building driver using build environment in WDK 7.

Let me know the process of building a driver for windows 8. I have Visual Studio 9, and i cant find template to create a new driver project. I have download WDK 8 but i can go no further with it.

How can i include a template in Visual Studio 9 to create a driver project? I cannot afford latest version of Visual Studio.

If any other option is available to build a USB driver compatible for windows 8 please elaborate it.

  • You need to use vs2012. You can use pro for free for a 90 day trial.

  • You are going to need VS2012 to build the driver for the Windows 8 environment.  After the VS2012 is installed install the Win8 WDK.  Then take a look at the documentation for using a Win7 driver project see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh454827(v=VS.85).aspx

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply, i have read about MSBuild that without installing visual studio windows 8 driver can be built using command prompt. I could not understand it. Is it possible?

  • Vs gives you a command line to exexute a build. You get msbuild with vs (actually the .net redistribution), but you also need the compilers from vs as well

  • OK i got your point , but if i have .net framework v.4.0. can msbuild within that directory be used to build driver for windows 8 and cant i use any other compiler?

  • Microsoft only supports using the one and only official compiler we tested the win8 WDK with, the compiler that comes with VS2012.  You can use another compiler as see fit, but it is an unsupported scenario.  While you can get MSBUILD by itself, the WDK relies on the VS toolsets and C++ project system to create the WDK toolsets. I don't think these toolsets are installed by MSBUILD standalone.
