"Create new SQL server database" grayed out RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just downloaded VWD 2008 express edition together with SQL Server 2008 Express. The "Create new SQL server database" menu item in the database explorer is grayed out. What do I need to do to get to that option?

  • Hello,

From the View menu, choose Database Explorer, in the database explorer, could you please right-click the Data Connections node and verify whether you can choose Create New SQL Server Database? See the following article:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/z6sa01t4.aspx

You also could try a different way:
    1. Go to Solution Explorer and right click on App_Data.
    2. Select 'Add New Item'.
    3. Choose SQL Server Database.
    4. Click "Add"

  • Hi,

tried both. None works. The "Create New SQL Server Database" menu item is grayed out, so I cannot use it. When I tried the App_Data, I got an error message: "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed before the completion of the operation or the server is not responding"

The only way I can create a new database is to do it with SQL Server Management Sudio. I wished I could do it within Visual Studio, and I would like to know why I cant!

    A bit frustrating!

  • Hello Jean,

To be frankly, I have never came across this issue. Sorry about that.

You may post your issue on the Visual Studio Web Developer Express Edition Forum so you can get better and quicker response as there are more experts on VWD.

    Thanks.
