Visual Studio Metro Templates versus Metro Design Guidline - What to use?

    Question

  • Hello,

I'm new to Metro Apps. I want to port a good running iPhone App to Metro. I read the Metro Design guide and I'm looking at the Standard Styles and Designs created by the Visual Studio Project Templates. But in many parts they are NOT matching.

    E.g.:

    - Design Guid Page 30: For vertically panning content, the top and left margins remain the same.

    - Visual Studio Code: The entire page respects the narrower 100-pixel margin convention for Portrait

And there is a lot more...

And if I look at Apps like the "Windows8 Metro Mail App" the margins and borders are different again.

What to use as a good guide? Or can I just design a good looking app and it is OK.

    Kind regards, Markus

  • Hello Markus,

You can watch the following videos on this topic

    http://vimeo.com/43548883

    http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/BUILD/BUILD2011/APP-395T

It's said in these sessions that metro style apps and design are different things and it's possible to break the rules when you create Metro Style Apps. Metro Style Apps are apps which can be run against WinRT platform. And they recommend, but does not require to follow all these rules. What they actually want from you is to provide user with the same User Experience whichever app he would open.

There is a bunch of articles on the UX design guideline in msdn documentation:

However, as far as I'm concerned they have strict requirements and you can get acquainted with certification requirements here:

  • Hello Markus,

Be aware that sessions have similar content and the same slides. And it's better to choose speaker before watching.

  • Hello Vitaly,

Thanks a lot for your links and time!

I watched the Videos, I like the ideas behind Metro. I think, that Content driven Apps are the future, even on the Desktop. In the slides they showed the grids of the Metro Design guide with specific Margins, Fonts and so on, so I will stay to this guidlines and Change the Visual Studio Templates accordingly.

Thanks again, and nice greetings from Germany,

    Markus

P.S.: For your Info: I'm not a iOS Developer. I'm a 100% Windows C#, WPF and ASP.NET developer. A friend of mine developed the iPhone App I was talking about and asked me to port it to Metro...
