Windows 8 support for RSSI value RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I found that Windows 8 does not actively poll the local bluetooth radio controller to obtain RSSI value of the link. As a result, the application cannot use the RSSI value to calculate the connection path loss.

This post http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wdk/thread/7f0cc876-3998-4230-8343-3820463a0672 suggests there may not be support for RSSI in Microsoft stack. I feel there can be a lot of applications which would require signal strength values.

Is there any other way to determine signal strength and use it in a Windows 8 application?

  • Hi,

Windows 8 does not provide a method to get the RSSI information from applications. The current polling method to obtain the signal strength information unfortunately has significant power implications which would have an important negative impact for background scenarios for Windows systems; A great impact on the CPU idle resiliency therefor battery life.  As a result no method has been made available until the fundamental design can be address.

    Thanks,
