Migrate SQL2000 to SQL 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • HI,

We are migrating SQL 2000 Enterprise edition to SQL 2012 using side by side approach. Size of the database is small (< 5GB)

Can we use SQL 2008 Express edition as intermediate SQL Server? Are there any downsides of using it.

    Thanks!

  • Hello,

Yes, if the database size is below 4 GB then you can use SQL Server 2008 Express as an intermediate SQL Server instance to migrate your database; if it's between 5 and 10 GB you can use SQL Server 2008 R2 Express, here was the DB size limit increased to 10 GB.

  • Hello,

As mentioned by Olaf, you can use Express if the databases have less than the 4 GB limit of SQL Server 2008 Express per database. That limit is 10 GB if you use  SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instead.

Another blocking point could be that your databases are using enterprise features like partitioning that are not supported on Express Edition.

    Hope this helps.
