Intermittent errors with SQL Server Connection in BizTalk Server 2013R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have an intermittent problem with SQL Server connections from our BizTalk 2013R2 environment. The issues arose
when the security department decided to install Trend Micro Deep Security on our SQL Server and BizTalk servers. The errors we are seeing are the following:

An error occurred while attempting to access the SSO database. Function: LookupXp File: lookupserver.cpp:296 Connection Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed while attempting to consume the pre-login handshake acknowledgement. This could be because the pre-login handshake failed or the server was unable to respond back in time. The duration spent while attempting to connect to this server was - [Pre-Login] initialization=41142; handshake=0; . SQL Error code: 0xFFFFFFFE Error code: 0xC0002A21, An error occurred while attempting to access the SSO database.

    and

An attempt to connect to 'BizTalkMgmtDb' SQL Server database on server "XXX" failed. Error: "Unable to complete login process due to delay in opening server connection.

    and also

An attempt to connect to 'BizTalkMsgBoxDb' SQL Server database on server "XXX" failed. Error: "Unable to complete login process due to delay in opening server connection.

The topography is that we're running BizTalk in a cluster with two nodes (Active/Passive) and the same with SQL Server.
However we don't see this errors in connection with any failovers etc.

We've made sure that our security guys have implemented the exclusions defined here: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/balbir_singh/2015/01/27/biztalk-server-anti-virus-exclusions/ but still it continues to happen. We've managed to narrow it down to the Trend Micro software since the errors didn't occur for 36 hours when trying to run it with the Trend Micro uninstalled.

Any further suggestions regarding what can be done?

  • After a long session debugging all this in cooperation with various partners and Microsoft we finally figured out that the culprit was Trend Micro Deep Security that was blocking the traffic due to delays in the scanning procedures. After an update from Trend everything started working as it should again.

  • Hi,

It looks connection is interrupting between the BizTalk Server and SQL Server at Network Layer, Have you checked SQL Server port(1433 if default) is allowed in Allowed Exception on Anti-Virus software.

Also refer the following link which highlights some more on Anti-Virus related issue(Refer Link#1).
