Kinect legal RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it legal to use a name with the word kinect (like Kinect Joy Ride or something like Kinecter). I understand this would be copyright infringment, however since this is non-commercial. I also understand this may be the dumbest question ever.

  • Austin and James,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. After consultation with lawyers, I have created a FAQ entry about this topic. Names like "Kinecter", "Kinect Joy Ride" and even "DaVinci Kinect" are not an acceptable use of the brand name. Please refer to question 11 in FAQ (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/kinectsdk/thread/927a8e6f-ce08-4fe8-9819-e5e05dd0d9d6) for more detailed guidelines.

    Hope this helps,

  • Austin,

We used the term "Kinect" as part of our app -- DaVinci Kinect --  demoed at E3.  For us it was a descriptor of what our app is rather than an attempt  to exploit the Kinect name in any way.

I'd suggest it depends on how you use the name.  Something like Kinect Lightsaber, for instance, would probably get you a cease and desist from George Lucas before you got one from Microsoft.
