Application config files and user config files RRS feed

  • Question

  • Are there clear guidelines how to organise and keep configuration files in Vista on application and user level ?
E.g xml application configuration file created in Visual Studio and containing connection strings which by default resides in the same directory with application executable and my understanding supposed to be read-only unless we add some functionality for updating . Assuming we want some GUI for updating  shall we delegate this functionality to separate maintenance executable or create  manifest  with  the main  application  executable and etc...
For user config files my understanding they just go to
    • Application.LocalUserAppDataPath (for user specific files) or in the
    • Application.CommonAppDataPath (for files that apply to all users)

    and should read-write without problems.
