Impact of deprecating Bing Map SOAP Services after 30 June 2017 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Team,

Recently we got to know, from below links that, along with Bing Maps V7 control, SOAP services are also going to be deprecated in June 2017.

    https://blogs.bing.com/maps/June-2016/Bing-Maps-V8-Web-Control-Released

    http://www.onterrasystems.com/blog/2016/9/13/bing-maps-ajax-v7-and-soap-apis-discontinuation.html

We are using Bing Maps V6.3 & SOAP services (http://dev.virtualearth.net/webservices/v1/geocodeservice/GeocodeService.svc , http://dev.virtualearth.net/webservices/v1/routeservice/routeservice.svc) in our application and would like to understand that what will happen on 1st July 2017.

    1) Will application stop working?

    2) Will SOAP services be still available/running but support won't be provided from Microsoft in case of any issue?

Please advise us on this as early as possible.

    Regards,

    Jony

  • The soap services will stop functioning. Note that the soap services were replaces 6 or 7 years ago by the Bing Maps Rest services. If using .net, there is an easy to use library for accessing the rest services. You can find it at https://github.com/Microsoft/BingMapsRESTToolkit

  • Hello Ricky,

Thank you for the prompt response.

Our legacy application is still using Bing Maps V6.3 hence we would like to know how long V6.3 controls will work for? Is there any plan to deprecate that as well, like V7 control?

    Please advise.

  • V7 is being turned off at the end of June as well and was replaced by v8 a year ago. V6.3 and v7 are both really old. V8 has a lot more features and is much faster.

  • Thanks Stefan, yes we are planning to migrate to V8.

But until it happens, we want to know what is the plan of Microsoft for it's customers who are still using v6.3 and how long v6.3 controls will work for?

  • v6 has already been officially discontinued as of Nov 30, 2016:

You're on borrowed time if your application is still running on v6. We are in the same boat. We actually have two applications (v6 and v7) that we are currently migrating.

  • As noted, V6.3 is discontinued. It will likely be turned off at the same time as V7. There is a really small number of users still using the v6.3 control.

  • hmm, seems like a communication problem: You don't have time to plan it. You should be already in implementing that migration.

Well, some experience tells me, that you may have some more time than the official time line suggests. But these were young API's under development. As bing is pretty mature, I won't expect more than a week over that deadline day.

When you're not able to meet those timelines, then you should consider filing a support case. Maybe they can help you.
