Reinstall VS2008 Fails - Missing/Inaccessible package-vc_minred.msi RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to reinstall VS2008 after having installed VS2010. It is being installed on a Windows 7-64 machine.   I've even gone so far as to tear out VS2010 and then try to reinstall VS2008 with no luck.

    The install fails because of a missing installation file,  vc_minred.msi.   Here is a snip from the logfile, dd_VC_MinRed_MSI535.txt:

    =======

    MSI (s)(44:3C) [23:14:08:440]: SOURCEMGMT: Media enabled only if package is safe.

    MSI (s) (44:3C) [23:14:08:460]: SOURCEMGMT: Source is invalid due to missing/inaccessible package.

    =======

    The requested directory C:\Users\max\AppData\Local\Temp\IXP07FF5.tmp is missing.

    I looked in the registry and found the key, FF29527A-44CD-3422-945E-981A13584000.  it was under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{FF29527A-44CD-3422-945E-981A13584000}

    I haven't found the installer file: vc_minred.msi.

    So
    1) Is there an easy way around this problem?

    2) Is the file vc_minred.msi available anywhere?  It doesn't seem to be on the MSDN VS2008 Pro disk.  If I can get it I can recreate the path.

    Thanks,

    Max

  • I tried *one more thing* and it seems to have gotten me past this failure.  Using info found in http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/03/24/8334544.aspx, I

    1) recreated %temp%\IXP07FF5.tmp\wcu\

    2) copied vcredistmin_x86.exe from the VS2008 Pro:\WCU to the new directory

    3) executed: vcredistmin_x86.exe /x  from that directory

    That produced vs_minred.msi in place.

    4) executed: msiexec /i %temp%\vcredistmin_x86\vc_minred.msi /qn /l*v %temp%\vcredistmin.log VSEXTUI=1 REBOOT=ReallySuppress

    It ran.

    Then I retried VS2008 setup.  It is currently running and I'm waiting for the next bug.

    ...

    which is MS Windows SDK for VS 2008 Headers and Libraries failed to install...

    Sigh.

  • Vicky,

    The problem is not completely solved.  There is still one component hanging up the install.  It is Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component.   Now I'm stuck in that I can't uninstall this or complete the install of VS 2008.   Got any ideas?   I started another question about this.
