installed vs community 2017, trying to migrate a vs2008 website, create the project in 2017, bring in vs 2008 files by add existing items, rebuild ok, but when try to debug get the following message about can't run some dll. there is a whole bunch of new stuff in a .../bin/roslyn folder including the new dll which is completely new from anything in 2008, this is not anything of my doing, some bug in vs2017?

I would post the pic of the error message, a jpg I saved but there's no way to just attach/upload an image in this forum? without the image being somewhere on the web? with its own url?

Somehow the VS project must have been corrupted, I created a new project, moved and added the relevant components of the current project and that new project is useable

    Hi,

Roslyn is the new "compiler as a service". For error messages it's likely best to just copy/paste them as text. Also the first step is likely to search for the same message in your favorite search engine.

Yes, this forum doesn't allow to uplload images. You have first to make it available at some other service.

searching for this isn't very productive, since this a .dll created by vs with the same name as the .aspx

there are many postings for 'unable to start program' none that I saw for the .dll of the program being debugged

if vs creates this .dll its seems very odd that it can't run something of its own creation

what is the purpose of this .dll? is it for debugging? comiling? would it be published to the webserver?

these types of error messages are images so to speak and therefore it is not possible to copy the text

the insert image url doesn't show anything here after clicking the insert tab, see below for link

    Hi bbxrider,

can you just try to post the description of the Error message?

I am not able to access the image via link you had shared.

    it gave me an error.

so try to provide the description of error or try to correct your link. so that we can try to access it and try to see the error message.

    Regards

    Hi bbxrider,

still i did not get any error message?

    your image looks like below.

other thing you had provided the long information, which is also not helpful to understand the issue.

you can try to create a new project in VS 2017 and manually copy the code to new project and check whether it solves your issue or not.

if it is not upgrading the project correctly then manual way to copy the code may work for you.

let us know about the testing result of manually copy the code.

    Regards

    Deepak

Seems  the images you are posting are not publicly available. This is just "Unable to start program" or do you have another sentence behind that ? You may have also perhaps some more details inside the Windows event log.

Also this is when you try to run your site in which browser?

Finally a standard action is to create a new project and see if it works to see if is a global machine problem or if it is related to a particular project.

Ah finally a last major change is that VS uses IIS express since few versions (while VS 2008 was liekly still using its own internal web server).

the original insert is google photos, when I insert it comes up right away in the post and also in the preview.... here the actual text of the link below...if some one doesn't mind can you verify the link by just pasting it into a browser address bar? (the text inside the quotes)  if it comes up when I create the post, and shows in the preview post and comes up in a browser..... why would somebody other than me not be seeing the embedded pic in the forum post ???? this is so frustrating such a simple forum feature that is so cranky here...

the following is an insert from imgBB, they have best selection of links I have seen so far, I tried using links from shutterfly and flickr, after pasting those links in the url box nothing happens they are just ignored!! they however come up in both ff and chrome, why would another wise valid link that works in browser be ignored here?? at this point I really don't care I just need to be able to imbed images and get on to the real work

and this is the actual link text for the above imgbb insert

    https://image.ibb.co/dAdazQ/dll_missing.jpg

any way I got past the error but don't don't know how except perhaps I now bring up vs as admin because that is needed to be able to publish to a local iis 10 site

which now brings up a new problem

I think with all the confusion in this thread I am going to start another thread for the current problem "iis express and iis 10.0 debug problem"

    Hi bbxrider,

you had mentioned that,"I am going to start another thread for the current problem "iis express and iis 10.0 debug problem."

I suggest you to close this thread before creating new thread.

did you try to add items manually in newly created project as I mentioned in my previous reply?

if yes, did that work for you or not.

if you did not test that then I suggest you to test it and let us know about the result.
