SQL Azure: number of database replicated RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

It is declared by MS that SQL Azure provides high-availability to enable zero downtime. And also from the presentation slide of IntroductionToSQLAzure.pptx (from Azure Training Kit), it indicates that there're replication of each database.

I am wondering for each database, how many replication / copy will be created?

  • There are 3 copies of your SQL Azure database maintained within the same datacenter. The copies are kept in sync in real time. If the primary instance goes down, current connections will be dropped and new connections will be routed to the secondary instance. Meanwhile, the tertiary either becomes or is used to create a new secondary. There will be a short period during which a new instance is created an brought up to current state.

Its important to note that currently there is no built in ability to keep a copy of the database in another data center. so if you have "smoking hole" recovery scenrio that you need to account for, you'll want to set up a mechanism to replicate your data either to another data center or back on-premise (I'd recommend looking at the Sync framework).

There is also no on-demand backup feature currently available. However, it is asked for pretty regularly.
