Hi,
Stephen Walther is definitely an authority when it comes to ASP.NET. Have a look at his book ASP.NET 4 Unleashed (http://www.amazon.com/ASP-NET-4-Unleashed-Stephen-Walther/dp/0672331128). This is the book from which I learnt ASP.NET. It is huge, but it covers everything that you need in order to become skillful in developing ASP.NET applications.

Huske

Such a book doesn't exist. You can't become a professional just by reading one (or more) book(s)

see also your other thread: http://forums.asp.net/t/1700362.aspx/1?Which+is+the+best+among+these+two+books
for ASP.NET generic, I'd still probably go with the Matthew MacDonald book.
caveat:
if you are only going to use ASP.NET MVC 3, then instead I would purchase http://www.amazon.com/Pro-ASP-NET-MVC-3-Framework/dp/1430234040/ ...
see Rob Conery's article http://blog.wekeroad.com/blog/i-spose-ill-just-say-it-you-should-learn-mvc/ and the related discussion at http://forums.asp.net/t/1430369.aspx.
Note: hans_v is correct ... "You can't become a professional just by reading one (or more) book(s)".
Also, you'll find substantial free material if you start from here: http://www.asp.net/get-started.

I have to agree with above comments by Rob and Gerry. The best way to learn something is to "jump into fire".
