SharePoint & AD LDS on 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,
I'm setting a virtual machine for my SharePoint dev/testing.   It's going to be a Windows 2008 server.  My question is "can I use the Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services or must I use the full blow AD on my virtual machine?"

    Thanks!

  •  Hello,
If you will be attaching getting your AD info from existing domain you do not need either.
If you will be creating this VM as separate test domain and you need to test AD functionality yuo will than need full domain controller. It is not recommended to install SharePoint on DC. I would suggest installing second VM and install DC on it.

  • But if I don't need to test AD functionality per se, I just need a user store, my questions is "can I just go with AD LDS"?   I'm trying it now so I might know in a couple of days but if there are tips, tricks, etc... that would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

Yes, you can go with AD LDS.

Here are some articles for your reference:

  • I have a question... I have a MOSS server that will go in a DMZ in my network, it will not be part of a domain.  I need to be able to pull in users for the system from another domain across WAN ....is it possible to use AD LDS?  If so I have read some of the articles yet it doesn't really state...what type exactly of LDIF I will need for minimum use in Sharepoint and what are the exact requirements.. exact ports, permissions..even if a trust ...which I wouldn't think there needs to be a trust since my MOSS server won't be part of a domain who would the Domain trust....?  Help on this would be greatly appreciated...
