Azure ASR alternet - Manual disk upload RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all - We have one On-prem Hyper-V with two VM each having 6TB of data disk. Azure ASR is failing due to the same and unable to enable replication method. So we are planning to do VM migration as below,

    - Export the VM on on-prem Hyper-V local disk

    - Create new VM on same Hyper-V with diff name and disconnected network with DHCP option

    - Convert the VM disk to VHD from VHDX

    - Make the fixed VHD disk.

Once above is done, manually upload the VHD (OS 300 GB + Data 6 TB) to Azure Blob storage and create the VM from OS VHD and attach the data disk.

Can anyone confirm if the above can work to migrate the where Azure ASR is not supported ?

  • Hi,

The data disk is too big for Azure Site Recovery (ASR) to work, so you will have to manually upload the VHD to Azure.

Manually uploading the VHD to Azure (Azure Blog Storage) and then attaching it to a new or existing VM should work just fine.

    Here's also a guide:
Migrate On-Premises VHD files to Azure

    Best regards,
