Word task pane Hello World tutorial fails with "file not found" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to run the HelloWorld application for task pane apps for Word:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/office/fp142255(v=office.15)

    First everything seems to work as expected. I created the example files on a network share and added the manifest to the trusted locations in the Trust center. After a restart, my App shows up in the "Insert App" menu in Word.

    However, I cannot get the App to start because it consistently fails with the message: "Internet Explorer: Cannot find 'file://vmware-host/SharedFolders/office/HelloWorld.html' Make sure the path or internet address is correct"

     My SourceLocation reads:
    <SourceLocation DefaultValue="\\vmware-host\SharedFolders\office\HelloWorld.html"/>

    It's a correct path. I can verify by opening the very same path in Internet explorer and it opens correctly. Also I've put the Manifest XML in the same path which is foun without problem by Word otherwise it would not show my App in the menu entry in the first place.

    I'm running Windows 7 on VMWare on a OSX host and the share is on a shared VM ware folder. But I've run into the same issue  on a dedicated Windows 7 machine.

    Has anybody run the tutorial successfully and can give advice how to set the correct path?

  • Hi,

    >>I cannot get the App to start because it consistently fails with the message: "Internet Explorer: Cannot find 'file://vmware-host/SharedFolders/office/HelloWorld.html' Make sure the path or internet address is correct"

    You couldn’t load the app because you host the html page on a network drive, the html page should be hosted on web server which support http or https protocol.

  • If this is the case, the tutorial should be updated, as it explicitly tells you to copy the html file to a network share.

    "Create a folder on a network share (for example, \\MyShare\MyManifests). Be sure that the <SourceLocation> element of the HelloWorld.xml manifest file points to this location for the .html page of the add-in. Save all of the files you created into this folder."

    I've actually got it working with a hard-coded local file path, like

    <SourceLocation DefaultValue="file:///C:/dev/HelloWorld.html"/>
