SQL 2014 mirroring with SQL 2008 R2? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can SQL 2014 mirror with SQL 2008 R2?  Please provide a reference for this.

Can you have a SQL 2014 node have both a mirroring role ( with a another SQL at a different site) and a AG role operating simultaneously?

What version of SQL 2014 allow for one nodes in AG in a primary datacenter >>> mirror synch with DR site?  Is this standard version?

Heard mirror synch is not recommended for different datacenters but rather asynch?

Is it possible to mirror from primary datacenter which has a two node AG >>> mirror synch with DR site (different AG with two SQL nodes) ?  We are not stretching a AG across the two different datacenters but are using a different AG at each datacenter.  Is this a enterprise version?

    No

For  onsite solution Standard Edition allows you to implement a two node Failover Cluster Instance  or database mirroring. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt614935.aspx

  • No?  Are you saying a SQL 2008 R2 cannot mirror with a SQL 2014 R2?

Can you have both AG and mirroring running "simultaneously" on sql 2014 standard?   The both AG and mirroring be run on SQL 2014 enterprise version?   The mirroring is for traffic between datacenters while AG is for HA within each datacenter.

For mirroring as per prerequisite the version of databases should be same so yes mirroring cannot exists between SQL Server 2008 r2 and SQL Server  2014.

SQL Server 2014 standard does not have availability group feature. I am not sure about configuration if on same instance for one database you configure mirroring and for other AG, I believe it may be possible but I do not see any advantage. Yes a database which is part of AG cannot be mirrored using database mirroring.

  • I though both sql 2014 enterprise and standard had the AG feature?

And do both sql 2012 enterprise and standard also have the AG feature?

  • hybrid azure / premise.

premise is 2012 sql enterprise two node cluster>>> upgrade to 2014 sql enterprise two node cluster.

mirror 2014 sql enterprise ( on premise) with 2014 sql enterprise (azure- primary site)

2014 sql enterprise (azure-DR site) asnych with 2014 sql enterprise (azure- primary site)

We would eventually like azure have own AG(two nodes) within at each site.

note- we want to maintain DR during process but we can add HA (AG) later once single sql are established on both primary and DR sites.

    XXXXXXXXXX

if we are unable to upgrade on premise sql 2012 enterprise to sql 2014 enterprise then we will proceed to sql 2012 enterprise.

I don't understand your point of repeating same question again and again SQL Server 2014 standard does not have AG feature and asking about whether the feature is in SQL Server 2012 standard is also incorrect since because it is not in 2014 it will not be in 2012 standard.
