Renaming vhd files with special characters RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I have a VM that has a vhd file with the following characters attached:

    %34Testing Vm w%47special chars%58½ t3s! @ (Unitrends, 1nc)[opát”ional]%34~`a' #$6^7&%42test+%63 %60d%62 ; t; %58,Æ.vhd

When I perform a backup of this VM using a requester from a 3rd party vendor, it works fine. But, the restore of all VMs on this Hyper-V server fails with the following error:

    CreateVssExamineWriterMetadata failed !! Error Code : 0x80042311

This error basically means that the writer metadata document was corrupted or bad.

I renamed this vhd file to regular characters and I did a fresh backup of all VMs. I was able to restore them correctly thereafter.

Can someone help me understand which is the character thats' causing the problem. Why does the Hyper-V writer allow a backup to run smoothly and not a restore?

  • The faulting character  happens to be ” (extended ascii 148). Is there any Hyper-V documentation regarding possible illegal characters for VM names?
