Report Design on Disconnected Data Source RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our application allows the user to choose the data source from the list of connection strings in the web.config during logon.

This causes a problem when report writing as the report needs to be told where to get the data from.

How can we easily use a ReportViewer control with an RDLC?  As I see it we have a few options:

    1. Create a dummy XSD, create the report and bind the objectdatasource on the report to the user selected data at run time -- messy and I ended up editing the RDL in text to add a column to the dummy datasource.

    2. Create Reporting Classes that returns lists of objects from the BLL and build the report using that as a website data source -- a lot of extra code in the BLL

    3. Use Crystal Report Viewer that allows you to change the connection string programmatically easily!!! -- Crystal has a number of deployment security issues!

Am a missing an obvious solution???

    Thanks
    Tony
