.net 2.0 install questions. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Afternoon all,

I am new to both .net and forums so forgive me if I violate any protocols.  I have two quick questions:

    1.  I am looking at the .net 2.0 redistributable and the .net 2.0 SP2 redistributable.  The 2.0 splash screen says .NET 2.0 Framework setup.  The .net 2.0 SP2 splash screen says .Net Compact Framework 2.0 setup.  Is the compact .net framework different from the .net framework or is that just how it's worded?

    2.  I need to do an unattended install of the .net 2.0 at the very least (executable name for 2.0 redistributable is dotnextfx.exe).  I see from the help menu that there is a /Q switch but it doesn't work.

Any thoughts?  Thank you very much!

  • Hi,

The .NET Framework is the desktop version and the .NET Compact Framework is a separate product that is used on mobile devices and things like that.  There is not a service pack for the .NET Framework 2.0 desktop yet.  The SP2 package you are describing is the .NET Compact Framework only.

For unattended install, I suggest taking a look at the .NET Framework 2.0 deployment guide at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa480237.aspx.  It contains information about command line switches, how to detect whether or not the .NET Framework 2.0 is already installed on the system, etc.

There are also some more advanced deployment articles at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/articles/574618.aspx.

    Hopefully this helps.

    Thanks!  Aaron
