No DVD drive to install Expression Web Professional RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

I've just bought Expression Studio 4 Web Professional and am looking forward to getting started with it. My computer doesn't have a DVD drive so I can't install the DVD. I've looked around to see if there's a part of the Microsoft website where I can download it and add in the product key, but can't see this.

Should I download the trial version and then type in the product key?

  • That should work and there's no harm in trying.

As an aside, you will be really stuck without a DVD drive, given that most commercial software these days tends to be distributed this way, so why not get one?

  • I recently saw an external DVD drive for 29.00 dollars at one of the stores (Comp USA I think) but even if you have to spend a little more its worth it. As Ian says- without it you are missing out.

  • Download Expression Web 4, Expression Design 4 and Expression Encoder 4 (check the version that came on your DVD since there is more than one.) Then use the key from your DVD to convert the trial to the full version.

FWIW, we have several computers from netbooks to very fast tablet PCs that do not have built in DVD drives. We have a couple of external dvd drives we connect to whichever machine needs them via USB. That would be my recommendation.

If you have access to a computer with a DVD drive you can also copy to memory stick or if they are on the same network (home, office or even adhoc though I wouldn't recommend the latter) you can share the DVD drive and access it from the computer w/o a dvd drive.

  • The link is here: http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/Web_Overview.aspx

The trial is the full version - only limited by the 60 days; your product key will activate it and unlock it beyond that 60 days, or immediately so it won't expire.

To activate it, under the HELP/ABOUT menu there is an option "Activate Product".

I must say it's rare to have a computer (I would guess a laptop) without a DVD player/burner.

  • Andrew,

It isn't as rare as you think for laptops to not have a DVD drive. No netbook I'm aware of has a bult-in optical drive, most tablet pcs do not have an optical drive (no slate tablet I know of and even some of the convertible tablets don't have optical drives) most ulta portable laptops even the Mac Air doesn't have an optical drive. Anytime where weight is a factor may well be missing the optical drive.

I've owned 5 tablets and only 2 of the convertibles had a DVD drive. My Lenovo had a DVD in the doc and the two Motions use external DVD burners as I mentioned earlier. My son's netbook also uses an external DVD. Besides either a flash drive or SD card (almost all of them have bult-in SD readers) hold a lot more than a DVD drive now so are a lot more space for the weight.
