  • Question

  • Dear All,

Is that good to use Foxpro DBF file in sharing mode like MySQL, SQL Server database ? Any disadvantages to do this ? I want to store DBF in server and use in network.

  • With todays Systems and SMB protcol you likely will have problems. In principle it is possible, there is a whole chapter about programming for shared access to data in https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/visualstudio/foxpro/h6hhascz(v%3dvs.80)

It might be a first faster route to share data to get your application going almost as is for multiple users working on the same data and not a local database each. But if you didn't program with shared access in mind, the necessary changes might mean you can also rewrite this with a server backend.

Edit: Well, to take out the panic or fear this might casue. You mention the most important word "shared" yourself. In VFP that means you USE some.dbf SHARED, but you don't need to go throuigh all code, you mainly SET EXCLLUSIVE OFF and that is a default anyway. But you have to think about using manual locking or not and buffering and transactions and update conflict management and things like that.

    Bye, Olaf.
