Create Overlay on Bing Static Maps? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it OK to create overlay on Bing Static Maps, then store and use that image on the website?

What I'm trying to do is to get the static map image using Bing service (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff701724.aspx). Create an overlay on top of that image. Store and display that image on the website.

Would this violate any Bing terms of use?

  • According to the terms of use:

You may not copy, store, archive, or create a database of the content, except that geocodes may be stored locally only for use with your Applications

The main purpose of this is that if you had a map for each location then what would stop people from generating the maps once and storing them on their server and never using Bing Maps again. That said, if it's meant to be more so an example for a blog post or an image that shows off a feature but the data on the map is irrelevant to where it is displayed then this is usually ok.
