Metro App Error: Windows can't access the specified path or file. You may not have appropriate permission to view this item. Please help!

    Question

  • Windows can't access the specified path or file. You may not have appropriate permission to view this item. Please help! I don't know if it has some thing to do with UAC's but I only have one user account. The apps used to work on the guest account though.

  • Hey Raptor449,

To restore your Metro applications, let's try refreshing Windows Developer Preview. Here is what will happen you when you refresh your PC:

    • Your files and personalization settings won't change.
    • Your PC settings will be restored to their defaults.
    • Apps from Windows Store will be kept. All other apps will be removed.

Follow the steps below to restore your PC:

    • Enter the Start screen
    • Click Control Panel
    • Click General on the left column
    • Under the Refresh your PC without affecting your files, click Get started

Then follow the instructions that will be displayed on the screen.

    Hope that helps.

  • Same problem here. Applications used to work before but now they are only working on other accounts but not on my account. What could be the problem? Is there any solution other than refresh? :(

Please note that my current account is Administartor and UAC is disabled.

  • Hey Mubaidr,

Take a look at the response by Ari Polsky - MSFT on September 16, 2011 in the thread linked below:
Remnants of UAC Are On Even When Disabled

You could try enabling User Account Control again if you disabled it to see if that returns the functionality of your Metro style applications. If you didn't disable User Account Control, you could try creating a new Administrator account which should have User Account Control enabled by default. You can do this by:

    1. Enter the Start screen
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. Select Users in the left column
    4. Click Add User
    5. Enter an email address if you want to connect the account and skip to step 9, otherwise continue with step 6
    6. Click More about logon options
    7. Click Local account
    8. Enter user name and password information
    9. Click Next

If you have associated the current account with an email address and wish to use the same email for the new Administrator account, you will need to change your account to a local account before creating the new account.

    • Enter the Start screen
    • Click Control Panel
    • Select More settings in the left column
    • Click User Accounts (and possibly User Accounts again if you are using Category view)
    • Click Change to a local account
    • Enter your password
    • Click Next
    • Enter the desired user name and password information for the (now) local account
    • Click Next
